Secretary Panetta Remarks at a Roundtable on Veteran Employment Hosted by Goldman Sachs Foundation

This is -- this is an important time, and it's important for a number of reasons. I mean, first of all, you know, we're -- we are probably at a turning point after 10 years of war.And as you -- as you know, you know, we have achieved some tremendous successes at going after terrorism. We've decimated their leadership, and I think we've really undermined their capability in trying to come together to plan another 9/11 attack. I think we have made the country safer. A lot of people have been working on it, but, frankly, a lot of efforts by the intelligence community and by the military community I think have impacted on terrorism. Still -- they're still out there. (Inaudible) increase the pressure but we've made some success.

Nearly three-quarters of a million veterans back from Iraq and Afghanistan who are now out of the military have sought medical care from the government, and more than half of those service members suffer from a mental health condition, including post-traumatic stress disorder. These are among the stunning numbers in a new report compiled by Veterans for Common Sense, a veterans' advocacy organization. VCS shared the new report with TIME prior to public release scheduled for this week. The group culled the information from government data mostly obtained through a raft of Freedom of Information Act requests submitted to the Defense Department and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Virginia Veterans Tribute 11-11-11

Each year, approximately 2,626 Service Members, Veterans and Families return to civilian life in the Williamsburg Communities. It is the goal of the Veteran’s Coalition, through Virginia Veteran’s Tribute.org and other ventures, to organize and motivate our Williamsburg Community to better reintegrate our soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who are fighting our Wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places around the world in the war on terror. Reintegration is one of the great difficulties that our servicemen and women face as they return home.

"For most Americans the wars remain an abstraction. A distant, unpleasant series of news items that does not affect them personally."

Admiral Mike Mullens

"I find local leaders want to structure something to take care of our veterans. The focus is on education, employment and health, and the private side has to help."

"All of them (speaking of U.S. servicemen and women) have remained dedicated to making sure a day like that never happens again,”

Admiral Mike Mullen - Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, speaking at the pentagon on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Click here for full article

Virginia Veteran's Tribute is a series of events designed to honor America's military veterans, celebrate their achievements and most importantly, to help the men and women of our armed forces as they return home and make the transition back into civilian life. The last piece, and the most important one, of this effort is our reintegration project, for more detailed information on this effort please see our link above or click here.

Reintegration is one of the great difficulties that our servicemen and women face as they return home. Admiral Mike Mullen, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has accentuated the need for communities across the country to organize and form support groups for these returning servicemen and women. The leadership network that plans and operates the above Tribute can also be used to fuse cooperation for today’s fighting men and women as they reintegrate into the community. In addition another goal is to ensure that the parade and the tribute are annual events on Veterans Day in Williamsburg.

Harry Walters Photo"A very special thanks to New Town Williamsburg, the support of the James City County Board of Supervisors and the Geater Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce for their invaluable initial and ongoing support to this worthy cause. This is precisely the kind of community leadership that our nation is calling out for and the Williamsburg leadership is responding with examplary character."

Harry N. Walters, President Veterans Coalition Inc.
